Author: Astrid Anna Emilia Lindgren
Birth: November 14, 1907 in Småland, Sweden
Died: January 28, 2002 in Stockholm, Sweden
Astrid was an activist for many things such as female equality, animal rights and perhaps most of all, she was an advocate for children.
She had two children. Her son, Lars, was born in 1926 and her daughter, Karin was born in 1934. When Astrid was working for the local newspaper in Vimmerby, she became pregnant with the chief editor's child. He proposed in 1926, but Astrid turned him down. She then moved to Stockholm and sent her son to live with a foster family. She thought it would be best since she could not financially support him. She visited him often and eventually brought him to live with her parents. In 1931, Astrid married Sture Lindgren, who was her boss. Three years later, they had a daughter, Karin.

Origin of Pippi
Astrid's daughter, Karin, originally thought up the name Pippilotta Viktualia Rullgardina Krusmynta Efraimsdotter Långstrump, but the name was just a little too long for the published story. When Karin was home sick, she asked her mother to tell her a story about Pippi. That is when Astrid created the character, Pippi Longstocking. Later, when Astrid was kept off of her feet, due to an ankle injury, she began to write the stories of Pippi down on paper. The book was finally published in 1945. Most of her books are strongly inspired by Astrid's own childhood experiences. She believed that the best way to write to children is to remember what it was like to be a child.
