In 1935 she began attending classes at the Art Academy in Copenhagen. In 1937, she met the Swedish painter and poet Arne Nyman who she married in 1940. They had a son within the same year. Two years later, the family moved to Stockholm, Sweden. In 1944, she separated from Arne Nyman, and moved in with author Uno Eng. This is when she began working as a children's book illustrator.
